40 Years Ago Today, Tricky Dick Ran Away from Justice.

And America hasn’t been the same since. We have become cynical, our government and media have been largely taken over by Republicans who are still pissed off that their party’s crimes were uncovered. Really, though, they should be grateful that the GOP as a whole pretty much got away with it.

Shortly thereafter, Ford pardoned Nixon so the crooked bastard wouldn’t have to account for his many crimes, while the Repubs planned a takeover of the public and private sectors so as to ensure that they would never again be held to account for their illegal, immoral, unethical or anti-constitutional actions. With a few exceptions, that takeover has been a great success.

Today, politicos routinely resign rather than face charges, because Nixon set a precedent; and they are rarely prosecuted, because Ford set another precedent. Political crime and corruption have been legitimized to the extent that an illegitimate “President” (Bush II) could steal the Executive Branch, loot the Treasury, allow thousands of us to be killed, lie us into war,  kill thousands more innocent people in other countries…and face not one single consequence for such horrific crimes.

More than one commentator has bemoaned the decline in respect for the rule of law, the lack of trust in government, the rise of hyper-partisanship, and the general corruption and cynicism that plagues our society today. And justly so. But rarely do they trace these naitonal afflictions back to their root cause.

In my humble opinion, the reason our country has turned to shit can be traced back to 1974, when President Nixon shredded the constitution, committed and encouraged manifold crimes, lied to America…and was then allowed to walk away scot-free.

Crimes need to have consequences. Criminals need to be punished. Otherewise, a society will become a lawless, corrupt cesspool of neo-anarchistic social Darwinism. And that is what has happened in the past four decades.

Fuck you, Tricky. And fuck all those who allowed you to run away from justice.

Today’s Republicans: Anti-Constitutional, corrupt Pedophiles and Convicts.

It’s true. Leading Teapubbies are pretty much guaranteed to fit into or more of those categories. For proof, one need only browse the news of the day:

Anti-Constitutional: in a clear and massive violation of the Establishment Clause, Steve Palazzo sent Christian Bibles to every other member of Congress to help them make good decisions. Uhmmmm, Stevie Boi, the law of the land forbids the making of laws based on religion. Really. Look it up.

Corrupt: the Repub Majority Whip used a lobbyist to help hire and fire his staff. Yes. Yes, he did:

Quinn Gillespie & Associates’ John Feehery sat in on and participated in multiple official interviews with job candidates last month for the new majority whip’s press operation. Scalise has not yet announced who he will name as his communications director.
Sometimes lawmakers rely on lobbyists for strategic advice. But inviting a lobbyist into an interview is highly unusual. Several ethics lawyers and current and former leadership aides said they have never heard of a similar arrangement.

Pedophiles: Ted fucking Nugent is a practicing serial child-molester, and he is well-loved by Repubs across the nation. And Duck Daddy Phil Robertson advocates marrying underage girls. In fact, he did so himself.

Convicts: Dinesh D’Souza, a self-admitted and convicted felon, will…oh Hell, I’ll just quote the article:

Dinesh D’Souza, a conservative author and filmmaker who in May pleaded guilty to making illegal campaign contributions, will give the keynote speech at the West Virginia Republican Party’s annual “Victory Dinner” in September.

D’Souza will speak at the fundraiser in Charleston on Sept. 19, four days before he is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court on one felony count of campaign finance law violation.
“Dinesh D’Souza has been a warrior for more than 20 years for conservative values and solutions to some of our most difficult problems as a nation, like education and immigration,” state Republican Party Chairman Conrad Lucas said in an email announcing D’Souza’s appearance. “We are proud to bring him to West Virginia at such an important time in our state’s Republican turn to red.”

Got that? These people are not bad apples in the barrel: they are lauded and exalted by the rest of the fruits in that container. Child molesters, thieves, whores and felons: those, my friends, are the very model of the New Republican Party. They lead it, promote it, belong to it, and vote for it. They are what the party of Lincoln has become.

Vote for a Republican, and you signal your support for child abuse and other disgusting, Anti-American acts.
Vote against them if, well, you DON’T support child abuse and other disgusting, Anti-American acts.

Idiot Repub thinks you can walk 1,500 miles while suffering from Ebola. Dafuq?

What a complete and utter brainless jackass is Congressman Todd Rokita, R-Bedlam. He said on a radio program that some of the illegal immigrant kids that have been conned into coming here are possible carriers of Ebola: http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/indiana-congressman-says-immigrant-kids-might-have-ebola/article_6cd84d69-3909-50d7-aa64-cc211b491795.html

For the readers of this blog, here are the symptoms of Ebola, direct from the CDC. Tell me if you think somebody could make it overland from, say, Guatemala while suffering from this list of ailments:

Symptoms of Ebola HF typically include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Joint and muscle aches
  • Weakness
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Lack of appetite

Some patients may experience:

  • A Rash
  • Red Eyes
  • Hiccups
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Bleeding inside and outside of the body

Symptoms may appear anywhere from 2 to 21 days after exposure to ebolavirus though 8-10 days is most common.

Yeah, seems kinda unlikely, doesn’t it? Pretty obvious to anyone, you’d say, and you’d almost be right. It’s obvious to anyone but a Teabagging Republican Congresscritter. Tell me, why dafuq does ANYONE for these half-wits?

No, make that quarter-wits. We’re supposed to believe that Ebola sufferers (and children, at that) are trekking across Central America, hundreds and hundreds of miles, over  mountains and through  deserts? Christ on a Lone Star bottle cap, what stupidity exists between the ears of GOP politicos.

America’s Government Used to Do Great Things. We Can Do It Again.

Forty-five years ago as I write this, three astronauts were preparing to return home from the Moon. In just a few short years, the United States government, private industries, citizens and taxpayers went from never having put so much as a bread roll into orbit to sending men to another globe, through outer space. And we did it again and again.

The government did not go bankrupt. Society did  not collapse. Indeed, we saw an unprecedented wave of technological, economic and societal expansion during the time of the space program. Taking big risks resulted in some tragedy, yes, but it also produced enormous rewards for the entire world.

We did this at the same time we fought wars against poverty, disease, and ignorance. All of these likewise enjoyed a large degree of success. None were won, any more than the drive to explore the cosmos; but a helluva lot of progress got made in a brief period of time. A time, you’ll notice, that saw the United States government acting like it had some guts, some vision, and some kind of purpose.

Now we have a government composed to an increasing degree of wimps. Republican-run states are going broke, their infrastructure is collapsing, their hospitals are closing, and indeed the GOP advocates letting immigrant children die in the desert, all because “government can’t do these things any more”. We’ve gone from can to can’t in Red states (and anywhere controlled by Repubs).

Where America once dared, we cower; where we dreamed, we are afflicted with nightmares; where we once sought to gain, we strive now only to avoid loss. It’s considered trite to say this, but it is true: “if we could put a man on the moon, we could save these kids/build these roads/heal these sick/feed those hungry”. It is a truth that the fearful do not wish to hear, and do not wish for you to hear.

Men used to walk on truly desolate shores, lands with no food, water or even air. They survived and returned. Nowadays, we act as if we can’t do so much as offer the necessities of life to a bunch of traumatized children. Please join me in calling “bullshit” on this way of thinking.

Fear is killing our nation. It is killing children, adults, our economy and everything we built back when we weren’t a load of scaredy-cats. We don’t have to live this way. All we have to do to reverse this horrific trend is take a deep breath, and take a risk or two.

Here’s a song that you really ought to listen to: it’s by a great artist named John Entwistle, and it’s about how it feels when “fear is the key to your soul”. Listen and you’ll hear the heart of Republican America. Listen and then resolve to cast aside fear, embrace risk, and make our country great again. Feed the kids, heal the sick, build the bridges, and explore the unknown.

It’s not that hard, friends. We just have to take that first step away from the fear that has been dinned in our ears by those whose purposes are best served by our being terrorized. That first step, and the ones that follow, will take us to a nation renewed. A nation that says (as it once did): “Yes, we can. And we will”.

Ohio’s 100% Republican Government Supports your Right to Swim in Sewage.

Yes, our Wall Street millionaire Guv and his Libertarian partners in crime are perfectly OK with endangering public health and calling it “choice”. You see, lakes across the state are heavily contaminated by feces, some of them more full of feces than at any time in history. And the state employees who are supposed to be responsible for our safety are saying & doing stupid, well, shit:

Other states, including Illinois, Vermont and Missouri, typically close beaches when E. coli levels pass 235 colonies per 100 milliliters of water. Yesterday, 13 beaches in Illinois were closed for levels that ranged from 300 colonies to more than 2,000.

(In Ohio,) Levels at Crystal and Brooks beaches exceeded 10,000 colonies this month.

Mary Clifton, recreation programs administrator for the Ohio Department of Health, said the state doesn’t want to shut down beaches.
“Ohio typically would prefer that consumers and constituents be able to make an informed decision, instead of dictating the use of the recreational waters of the state,” Clifton said.

You might ask “why would someone working for a ‘department of Health’ knowingly expose people to record-breaking health hazards?” Good question. The answer, as it always is with the GOP, revolves around handing rich people money and shafting the rest of us.

You see, it costs more to close a beach than it does to put up a sign. Likewise, it costs money to maintain sewage systems, control wildlife, and regulate things like agricultural and industrial pollution. And when your elected government is focused on stealing money from the taxpayers so as to pad its cronies’ offshore bank accounts, why, there isn’t much money left to do, you know, the actual job of the government.

Ohioans, by their votes, decided to swim in shit. Said swimming in fecal matter being both real and metaphorical. And at this point, it links like the lazy, stupid liberals and centrists of the Buckeye State will once again not bother to go to the polls in 2014, allowing Republicans to continue their crime spree. And by so doing, allowing our children to continue swimming in shit.

Fucking idiot voters.

The Republican Party is Now Officially, Totally, Clinically Insane.

The four most recent Teapublican-related news items to hit my newsfeed (which draws from at least ten different sources) demonstrate that factual validity, accuracy, sense and indeed sanity no longer have a place in the party of my forefathers:

Michele Bachmann (R-Loony Bin) is conflating starving, traumatized illegal immigrant children with rapists and invaders:

“Foreign nationals that have come into the United States are between 300- to 500,000,” Bachmann told an incredulous Crossfire co-host Van Jones. “My heart is broken for a female college student in Minnesota who was raped, murdered and mutilated by a foreign national who came into our country.”

Todd “Legitimate Rape” Akin is now accusing the Repubs of sabotaging his campaign because, well, I’m not quite sure, but Kray-Kray is clearly involved:

Former Missouri Rep. Todd Akin continues his comeback tour today with an interview with the Daily Caller, in which he blames his 2012 Senate loss on “the direct attacks of the Republican Party leadership on our campaign,” which he says were part of the party establishment’s effort to push an “anti-American agenda.”

Akin claims his own party sunk his campaign with “censorship of the truth” because they were afraid of the “elite liberal media.”

Akin, for his part, was apparently merely trying to generate “patriotism in the hearts of Americans” when he claimed that survivors of “legitimate rape” do not become pregnant.

Open Carry Texas, a load of Teabagging, seditious, racist fuckwits, is planning to march through a black neighborhood, brandishing their long guns at the law-abiding locals.

Open Carry Texas, a gun rights advocacy group, announced that they have scheduled their march through the Fifth Ward in Houston. The march, which was initially scheduled for Juneteenth but postponed at the last minute, will feature open-carry enthusiasts marching through the streets of the predominantly black Houston neighborhood carrying long assault rifles.

Open Carry Texas also announced that they’ll have a real-life black person marching with them, Maurice Muhammad. As Liberaland pointed out, Muhammad is a radical who promotes the killing of police officers on his Facebook page. He also is apparently the leader of a group that openly wishes for a race war. Liberaland also pointed out that OCT’s blog entry is more about Grisham’s own issues with the law than his concerns about the black community. While he talks a big game about unfair laws regarding gun ownership, and he positions himself as some kind of civil rights fighter, the reality is that he himself has a conviction on his record and cannot apply for a conceal-carry license.

And it turns out that Republican women think they themselves are too stupid to understand basic math, so men need to dumb down their speech so women can understand it:

““Men do tend to talk about things on a much higher level,” Ellmers said. “Many of my male colleagues, when they go to the House floor, you know, they’ve got some pie chart or graph behind them and they’re talking about trillions of dollars and how, you know, the debt is awful…We need our male colleagues to understand that if you can bring it down to a woman’s level and what everything that she is balancing in her life — that’s the way to go,”.

Four news articles in a row. Nary a one of them involving rational, substantive, fact-based foreign or domestic policy. All of them involving lunatics saying lunatic things. And honestly, I can hardly remember when this sort of psychopathology didn’t dominate Republican party discourse.

The lot of them need medicated, treated, and counseled so they can become productive, useful members of society. Because right now, the inmates have escaped the asylum and have taken over much of our government, and most of our media. Anybody know where we can get bulk discounts on Haldol and EST?

Bastille Day, and how it could happen again:

On this day in 1789, the 99% of  18th-century France started a bloody revolution against the 1% of their day. That revolution happened because the ruling elite were a load of blind, deaf, ideological, excessively conservative idiots. Said idiots acting a lot like the Teabaggers and Randians of our time, now that you mention it. A lot of history is being repeated. For example:

  • Wealth and income inequality were at then-historic highs,
  • Infrastructure was degraded and inadequate, due to lack of funding,
  • Poverty, infant mortality, and chronic hunger were the “new normal”,
  • The government was too preoccupied with internicene pissing matches to do its job,
  • The government pretty much flipped off the 99% on frequent occasions, and
  • Wars of choice were bleeding the country of lives and wealth.

Fast-forward to the present day, and you can see the very same things happening here. The ‘baggers and greedheads of the Right Wing keep saying AMFYOYO to the populace, and the American people have had just about enough of it.  You’d think that the rich and powerful would have gained a few smarts in two-and-a-quarter centuries, but you’d be wrong. They are just as pig-ignorant, stubborn, willfully stupid and inhumane now as they were then.

If we don’t make some basic changes back to a less partisan, more equitable era, we’ll see history repeat itself. And with a more heavily-armed and radicalized bunch of revolutionaries than the Bourbons had to deal with, we can assume even more people will die, and far more of our nation will be destroyed than ever happened during the Terreur.

Note to the 1% of the 21st century:  get a clue, and that soon. Learn from the mistakes of your predecessors, for all of our sakes. The lives you save will not just be your own; they’ll be ours as well.
